Saint-Gobain Canada Receives Key Approval for Antrim Gypsum Mine in Nova Scotia

Provincial Environmental Assessment approval allows project advancement that will provide local gypsum to company's wallboard plants in eastern Canada and US

Saint-Gobain, through its building products subsidiary CertainTeed Canada Inc., has received environmental assessment approval from the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change for its Antrim Gypsum Project in Halifax County, Nova Scotia. This major milestone allows the company to move to the project’s detailed permitting phase and toward construction beginning in 2026.

The approval comes as Saint-Gobain continues to successfully execute its Grow and Impact strategy, which includes investing in major, fast-growing markets. By establishing operations in Nova Scotia, where eastern North America’s only known major source of gypsum is located, the company will further strengthen its ability to serve its wallboard plants in eastern Canada and the United States with locally mined gypsum, a key ingredient in wallboard production.

The project received positive feedback from local neighbors, stakeholders, and rightsholders including the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia, for its sustainable approach including progressive reclamation and commitment to investing and creating jobs in the local community. Aligned with Saint-Gobain’s mission to be the leader in light and sustainable construction, the mine will be sustainably managed, with well-designed mitigation planning and a commitment to protect species at risk, like the Black Ash tree. By locally sourcing gypsum for its eastern facilities, the company will also be able to reduce its scope 3 carbon emissions as it seeks to achieve net-zero carbon by 2050.

“Together with the ongoing investments in our Canadian wallboard plants, the Antrim Mine will support our customers’ growing needs with the high-quality wallboard they trust, all while utilizing sustainable production practices,” said Julie Bonamy, CEO of Saint-Gobain Canada. “With investments in our local mines and recycling efforts, along with strategic initiatives like the electrification of our Montreal plant to manufacture North America’s first zero-carbon (scopes 1 and 2) produced wallboard, CertainTeed is leading the way in light and sustainable construction in Canada.”

In addition to the Antrim Project, CertainTeed Canada recently completed construction on its Kootenay West Mine in British Columbia, which is now operational at full capacity with plans to develop a new railroad out facility to service its facilities in Western Canada. The company is also reopening its Amaranth Mine in Manitoba to serve central Canada. These efforts are in addition to a partnership with New West Gypsum to recycle and reuse wallboard in production in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec, which has already led to over one million tonnes of wallboard being recycled and reused at the Vancouver plant alone

With over 160 manufacturing locations in Canada and the United States, every current and future member of the company’s team plays a vital role in achieving its sustainability goals. A current list of job openings at all Saint-Gobain locations can be found on the company’s careers website.
