The Analytical and Material Characterization team within Saint-Gobain Research North America is seeking a hands-on Research Engineer to lead our Mechanical Testing Lab. The Senior Research Engineer I will lead our mechanical testing lab and focus on enabling the success of our customer’s product development and qualification. They will rely on their active listening skills to understand our customer’s unique needs and apply creative problem-solving skills in support of current and next generation products in the construction industry and high-performance materials sectors. The Mechanical Engineer will oversee/perform mechanical testing of a wide range of materials and engineering analyses to aid in the development and improvement of Saint-Gobain products and processes. Specifically, this position emphasizes the application of knowledge and techniques from the field of solid mechanics and strength of materials to solve problems involving mechanical behavior, processing, failure, and design of materials and products. Working within a team of engineers, the successful candidate will be comfortable applying a combination of practical engineering knowledge and theoretical background to address industrial problems spanning a wide variety of materials, applications, and environments.

Essential Functions

In this role, the new team member will:

  • Lead the design and execution of a wide range of thermo-mechanical tests to solve problems in different materials and applications, including:
    • Tensile, compression, flexural, impact, and fatigue testing.
  • Manage the mechanical testing lab and its workflow to ensure on time delivery of quality results.
    • Including but not limited to people, tools, calibration and maintenance schedules, resources, workflow, investments.
  • Collaborate with internal R&D teams to develop and implement testing strategies that address their specific product performance challenges.
  • Understand and translate customer needs into actionable plans with clear deliverables tied to customer success.
  • Analyze test data using advanced tools to identify trends, model material behavior, and solve complex technical challenges.
  • Report and document results of work in manner consistent with company standards
  • Present findings in written and oral formats, generate IP and technical reports.
  • Continuously stay up to date on relevant technologies and knowledge in current area of responsibility.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years of experience or MS with 3+ years of experience or an entry level PhD in Mechanical Engineering or other related Engineering disciplines.

Experience:

  • 2+ years of experience working with mechanical testing, in scoping, planning and execution and developing new methods for a wide range of materials (polymers, metals, ceramics).
  • 2+ years of experience working with mechanical testing such as flexural, tensile, compressive, creep, fatigue, torsional and shear.
  • 1+ years working in the assessment of mechanical failure, being able to investigate and correlate failure mechanism using destructive and nondestructive analytical methods, such as: microscopy, ultrasound, tomography, penetrating tests etc.

Skills:

  • Experience using testing standards (ASTM, ISO, etc.) and developing test procedures and SOPs.
  • Experience managing a direct report.
  • Ability to manage a mechanical testing lab and handling the continued flow of test requests and delivering quality data on time in support of diverse internal and external customers.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate across all levels of the organization and drive success in projects.

Senior Research Technician - CertainTeed Platforms
Position Description
Job Summary

WHY DO WE NEED YOU?

The Senior Research Technician safely performs advanced specialized technical functions involving testing, analyzing, improving, installing, operating, maintaining, and/or solving problems concerning complex (and at times new and innovative) processes, equipment, products, and prototypes. Prototypes and products generally relate to the construction and building materials. Processes and operations tend to mimic manufacturing systems at lab-/pilot-scale, ensuring that our trials and experiments can be scaled up in an industrialized fashion.

The SRT, alongside the principal investigators, develops and implements protocols and standard operating procedures to ensure and maintain a high level of safety, consistency, and organization in experiments. They collaborate closely with principal investigators to design experiments, troubleshoot issues, and ensure that projects align with the overall research goals. Other roles include, but are not limited to, 5S, training, updating SOPs, communications about the overall project progress, maintaining proper inventory of the materials, and general equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Leading role in lab management: safety aspects, equipment maintenance, materials inventory, and chemical reconciliation, 5S, lab audit preparation and action follow-up, lab postings, regular equipment checks etc.
  • Maintain laboratories and equipment including set-up, operation and troubleshooting of experimental equipment or instruments. Leads troubleshooting initiatives and machine repair efforts.
  • Interacts with facilities and outside contractors for machine and equipment repairs.
  • Supports engineers and scientists in R&D teams with their projects, executes (conducts hands-on experimental works), documents, and effectively communicates project tasks, results, & updates. Prepares/processes materials samples including:
    • -Active involvement in standard and exploratory experiment design
    • -Routine laboratory activity to make or prep materials and test samples
    • -Development work with non-routine R&D assignments such as design of fixtures for experimental set-up and establishing proper data acquisition.
  • Executes and/or supports commercial and manufacturing scale-up support requests.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate with 7+ years of experience; Associate degree with 4+ years of experience in technical related field of study/interest, ideally STEM related.
  • Able to graph and chart data with capabilities to use personal computer and Microsoft Office applications, such as Excel, Word, Teams.
  • General laboratory knowledge including safe and proper chemical handling.
  • Create a grassroots proactive culture of safety (physical) by encouraging, empowering, and involving all staff in safety.
  • Able to work in a plant environment as needed to scale up products or processes.

We believe in the importance of pay transparency in what we offer prospective candidates and provide the local pay range for this position, which is $87,500 to $135,500 per annum. The base pay offered can vary depending on location, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.

 

In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for an annual bonus. The targeted bonus amount is 10% of base salary based on company and individual performance measures. The Total Target Cash range (base pay and annual bonus) for this position, is $87,500 to $151,700. Bonus payments are part of variable compensation and by nature can vary based on company and individual performance and is not a guarantee.

What’s the job?

A Maintenance Helper is a non-skilled, entry-level position that provides labor and assistance to qualified ECR (Electrical Controls Repair) team. Maintains a safe and clean work area. May perform entry-level tasks necessary to support the maintenance department including but not limited areas such as:

Assist ECR as they perform: maintenance, installation and troubleshooting working on a range of voltages, Allen Bradley PLCs, instrumentation, troubleshooting 4-20 mA circuits, variable frequency drives, power generators, transformers, lighting, and servos along with Yokogawa DCS systems.

Learn to read, understand and work from all types of drawings, prints, and system diagrams and specifications. Along with the theories and practice of electric, electronic, pneumatic, combustion, and instrumentation systems.

A skill/knowledge test may be administered to assist with determining training and development opportunities. The starting pay is $24.03/hour Monday- Friday 7:30am – 3:30pm

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

Ideal Candidate Will Have a Minimum of 6 Months Experience in the Following Areas:

  • Able to trouble shoot motors effectively
  • Knowledge of 4-20mA circuits
  • Knowledge of working with variable frequency drives

Supply Chain Coordinator

**This is a hybrid role with 2-3 days a week required in one of our Saint-Gobain corporate offices**

The Supply Chain Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining the DRP and 7 Hills paper requirements for the Gypsum business. This role will ensure inventory levels, replenishment deliveries, and production plans meet the demand of both internal and external customers. 

  • Act as a liaison to the Seven Hills operation to ensure the production plan aligns with the needs of our manufacturing plants through on-time, in-full planning (OTIF) 
  • Create production and shipment schedules for Seven Hills (100 full truckloads per week) and enter/maintain the purchase orders.  Communicate the schedules to the plants along with any changes as needed based on unexpected shutdowns or extra paper produced 
  • Run weekly Seven Hills meeting with Seven Hills personnel and Site Buyers to discuss paper inventories, trials/plant shutdowns, logistics issues, and any other issues involving Seven Hills paper that affect plans 
  • Works closely with Production Planning to align paper ordering from vendors outside of Seven Hills 
  • Schedules paper deliveries to align with productions schedule needs while coordinating with the Logistics team to ensure feasibility of transportation on desired dates 
  • Analyze demand and supply at each manufacturing location and third party warehouses to optimize finished goods transfer schedule by both truck and rail. Assist third party warehouses with appropriate inventory adjustments 
  • Facilitate replenishment plans for resale products; balance intercompany invoicing between Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics and CT Gypsum 
  • Distribute monthly SLOB & Cycle Count Compliance Report; create awareness amongst Sales and Warehouses for focus areas around inventory management 
  • Maintain MRP Master Data for transferred Finished Goods in all stocking locations, including stocking and Planned Independent Requirements data  
  • Schedule raw material transfers between plants if requested by Purchasing 
  • Participate in all necessary supply planning related meetings 
  • Manage the relationship with all Site Buyers to closely coordinate PO management in coordination with the production schedule’s needs 
  • Works closely with Sales regarding critical job requirements and develops fulfillment plan 
  • Coordinates with Gypsum warehouses on both DRP and Raw Material stocking levels 
  • Help maintain master planning data to best utilize our ERP planning system 

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

What do you bring? 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain preferred  
  • 1-3 years’ experience Planning/Purchasing in a manufacturing environment preferred 
  • SAP ERP system knowledge needed or equivalent systems required 
  • This position requires close attention to detail and proficiency with internal computer systems, including the SAP ERP system, Excel, Microsoft Word, and Power BI 
  • Must have excellent written and oral communications skills with particular attention to detail 
  • APICS certification or the ability and willingness to become certified 
  • Ability for occasional travel to 7Hills or other gypsum sites
